Focuses on all aspects of NEC Branded solutions and products related to assigned area using IT software, storage, and/or server products, including product lifecycle, profitability, competitive positioning, and strategic planning.  The individual will have an intimate knowledge of an assigned market(s).  They will be able to present NEC solutions to Analysts, Partners, Customers, and Sales. The ideal candidate will understand how the solutions fit within NEC’s Unified Communications and IT product portfolio, with emphasis on the assigned products to ensure they deliver value in the assigned solution segment.  In addition, this position will work with Operations, Customer Service, Sales and other members of the product management team to ensure products meet stated requirements and are introduced using the appropriate New Product Introduction phases.  The individual will also work with NEC Japan to communicate product feedback and market requirements.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

50% Product Management

  • Responsible for all Product Management aspects of assigned NEC solutions, and designated storage or server products in North America including:
  • Collecting and understanding customers’ and potential customers’ needs (directly, or through sales or partners) as well as competitive product information (directly, or through sales, partners and/or analysts).
  • Development and ownership of the Product Requirements Document (PRD) and or Marketing Requirements Document (MRD) which includes:
    • Solution Product Vision which identifies and solidifies a vision through collaboration with key internal and industry experts.  The solution product vision will include a SWOT analysis that takes into consideration the needed resources available or potentially available within the company, as well as identifying potential partners.
    • Market & Opportunity Identification which outlines and identifies the specific segments which the solutions will penetrate.  This should include specific industries, or more generally, cross-industry common problems needing to be solved by the solution.  It should identify targeted market penetration considering resource requirements, marketing requirements, financial contribution and potential risks.
    • Product/Solution Positioning which defines server product and solution positioning (i.e., how we want the target market to “perceive” the product).  Product positioning includes the establishment of: competitive product differentiation and positioning; unique selling propositions; and key features and benefits.  
    • Product Definition clearly defines the product in terms of cost, partners involved, orderable items and pricing using competitive analysis for justification of NEC’s suggested pricing.  This includes details needed by manufacturing and service to fulfill the delivery and support of the solution.
    • Warranty & Service Programs which define the base warranty levels required to support the product as well as optional service programs available for premium service.
    • Cross Divisional Interaction which indicates the internal organizations that are required to support the solution and establishes the schedule of interaction.
    • Cost Review which includes the standard product cost, royalty costs, warranty reserve, service costs, sales commission, inventory reserves and logistics costs.
    • Pricing Strategy which creates the MSRP/List Price considering markup, discounts for channel and solution integrator partners, as well as promotional (demo systems) and associated terms.
  • Forecast and Inventory Management: Works with corporate staff to review and modify monthly production forecast generated by corporate Supply Chain Management (SCM).  Works with corporate staff to manage inventory for responsible products. Provides direction to SCM regarding product and solution end of life.
  • Royalty Payments: Ensure royalties for all products are set up properly in SAP.
  • Price Lists: Provide updated lists at least quarterly to Sales Support, as well as initial prices of new products/solutions. Keep list prices updated in SAP for all changes by submitting VK11 price update forms. Verify completion in SAP.
  • Budget Development: Provide budget input and quarterly modifications as needed, to include expected sales, growth opportunities, risks to be considered, engineering and marketing (demo/eval) system requirements, collateral costs and other marketing needs.
  • NPI Activities: With the assistance of the Program Manager, ensure all NPI activities are completed accurately and timely. Coordinate and participate in Gold Box Review (GBR). Suggest improvements as needed.
  • Cost Improvements: Work with suppliers of all solution components, including NEC Japan to develop cost improvement plans. Keep standard costs and purchasing info records updated and accurate as appropriate for each plant by submitting material master or PIR update forms as needed. Verify completion in SAP.
  • ECN Implementation: Coordinate NEC Japan ECNs, working with Sales, Engineering and other Product Managers.


30% Sales Support

  • Responsible for all aspects of sales support for assigned solutions and products, including:
    • Generate collateral including sales tip sheets/battle cards for use by sales team, channel partners and system integrators and solution partner product announcements. Coordinate case studies with customers and white papers from expert sources. Provide feedback to industry analysts as needed.
    • Work closely with NECAM Sales to provide and deliver sales presentations and competitive positioning at least quarterly to sales and partners. This can be through product releases or targeted training.
    • Work with sales and other product management to identify promotional opportunities and cross ETU product solutions using the assigned product and/or solution.
    • Marketing Strategies: Work jointly with corporate marketing to develop a clear strategy which includes product positioning, go-to-market plan, ongoing strategy, event and trade show support requirements, and website updates. NEC communication channels should be a major part of the marketing strategy.
    • Training Development: Create and/or coordinate tools and training for the sales and sales engineering teams, including coordination of technical training as needed for engineering and technical support.
    • Order Support: Review Salesforce pipeline reports, CPQ quotes and Backlog/Order Status reports, as compared to inventory and forecast to determine if substitutes are appropriate.
    • CPQ: Update and test CPQ as needed to configure your products and solutions to be easily quoted by Inside Sales and partners.
    • Review customer RMA requests, and credit and debit requests to determine impact to revenue and accuracy of request.
    • Support the customer evaluation program as a beta program if needed, or ongoing proof of concept and acceptance.
    • Support the special pricing, deal registration and military deal registration processes.
    • Assist and support customer RFQ and RFP requests

10%   Partner Development

  • Responsible to develop partnerships to increase revenue for the identified products and solutions, including:
    • Identifying opportunities and developing relationships with potential partners to improve current solutions and products. These partners could be internal to NEC or external.
    • Identifying opportunities and developing relationships with potential partners to introduce new and upcoming solutions and products. These partners could be internal to NEC or external.
    • Provide monthly feedback to internal management regarding the progress of new and current partnerships, solutions, and products.
    • Coordinate partner setup with Finance and/or Purchasing as needed.


10% Product Feedback

  • Responsible to meet with NEC Japan at least monthly regarding existing business status; opportunities; challenges; and new product, solution and partner development.  This process includes:
    • Keeping track of and reporting weekly all open issues and action item status.
    • Communicating feedback for existing and future products and solutions. Feedback could come from sales, partners or other internal and external sources.
    • Keeping track of major product development milestones with NEC/J R&D.
    • Working with NEC/Japan R&D to overcome problems, both technically and internally, that may be contributing to the risk of a product missing release milestones. To communicate product release milestone dates to appropriate staff at NEC’s US companies.



  • Education:  BA/BS degree or equivalent, preferably in a technical field or equivalent experience. Master Degree is preferred
  • Experience: Three or more years of product management experience in Telecommunications industry, with a focus on Unified Communications.  Previous experience in cloud applications is a plus.
  • Certifications, Licenses, etc: None required.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer and/or Technical Skills: Ability to generate reports based on sales data, familiarity with back-office systems to analyze sales and other aspects of the assigned products.  Familiarity with marketing, project management and analytical tools.
