Open Networks Standards Engineer

 

NEC is growing its 5G business internationally and is looking for a best-in-class standards manager to lead its open and disaggregated open standards efforts. NEC has been a pioneer and an early leader in SDN, Open RAN and cloud native core with publicly announced deployments at some of the most advanced telecom networks such as Rakuten and Telefonica. Together with NEC’s 5G core and Netcracker’s orchestration systems, Open RAN is an important part of NEC’s growth in telecommunications.

The Open Networks Standards Manager will have responsibility for the monitoring, contribution to ONF and TIP.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities                                                

 

Details

 

1) Regularly attend TIP and ONF working groups meetings and activities.

                                                       

2) Report working groups strategies, direction, roadmap, progress and action items to product management and coordinate updates to development groups.

 

3) In coordination with product management identify product requirements, NEC differentiators, roadmap items that should be presented / contributed / protected in TIP / ONF.

 

4) Report on customers, prospects, partners, competitors’ stance and direction in the working groups

 

5) Elaborate a strategy to meaningfully contribute to the working groups’ activities

 

6) Identify opportunities to partner, contribute, lead interoperability, plugfests, demo, prototyping, trials

 

7) Coordinate with product management and development team support for testing, trialing

 

 

 

Prerequisites
 

Education:

Master of science, engineering degree in computer sciences or telecommunications preferred, MBA an asset but experience in lieu can be considered.

Experience:

  • Thorough understanding of telecommunications networks (4G, 5G), their components and workflow
  • Experience participating / leading working groups and activities at O-RAN alliance, ONF and TIP
  • Has contributed, edited, led SDO activities in the past (3GPP, ETSI, MEF, …)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in RAN, preferably exposed to open RAN
  • 5 + years in standards management or product or solutions architecture roles
  • 7+ years in telecommunications
  • Telecom vendor or telecom operator experience
  • Agile / Lean methodologies and frameworks
  • Understanding of cloud native architectures, microservices, containers
  • Understanding of Radio Units hardware components
  • Understanding of hardware / software acceleration in telecoms (DPDK, SRIOV, ASICS, FPGA, GPU…)
  • Understanding of massive MIMO, Beamforming

General Work Environment:

Work from home / remotely (anywhere in the world) / or in one of NEC’s office when / if appropriate

Travel: Must be able to travel internationally up to 40% of their time
